Challenge: Adding credible carbon calculations without diverting from AWARE™'s core product
AWARE™'s core value proposition is traceability. They give producers the tools they need to collect and secure data about their productions.
Producers log what they produce (what the product is made of, how much they made, and how it was made), along with supporting evidence (sustainable process certifications, chemical and social compliance certificates, and more) and meta data (when and where).
Once it’s added to AWARE™, it’s made unchangeable and travels with the physical material to the next organization in the chain, all the way to the final product. In this way, no one is able to modify the data they receive, and the ‘truth’ about the materials in a product is collected for consumers and regulators alike.
Earlier this year, as demand for verified emissions data grew among their users due to DPP and ESPR regulation, the team wanted a way to add PCF calculations without losing focus on what they do best.
- Building emission factor matching in-house was neither AWARE™'s expertise nor a good use of their team's time. Rhys Davies, product lead at AWARE™, had already worked on building an emissions calculator from scratch previously and knew how difficult it can be. “Outsourcing this part of our tool wins back time to focus on our priorities.”
- Other options on the table carried trust and quality risk. Rhys considered contracting agencies offering to build a custom calculator, but without a proven track record in emissions science, he felt that he would either have to be too deeply involved in supervision, or take unacceptable risks on reliability and quality.
- AWARE™ needed a solution flexible enough to grow with them. Rhys wanted a solution that could grow as usage increased without compounding the burden on his team.
Solution: Embed Climatiq's PCF API to lift the development burden from AWARE™’s team
Because previous experience had shown him how difficult building an emissions calculator can be, Rhys immediately turned to Climatiq to integrate PCF calculations, meaning they could get capabilities up and running quickly and reliably.
AWARE™ integrated Climatiq's emission factor matching and PCF calculations into its existing data flow, letting users make carbon footprint calculations straight from the production data they already log on the platform.
- Proven expertise in emission factor matching. After researching the space, Rhys knew Climatiq had already solved the hard part of emission factor mapping with Mapping Agent, so AWARE™ wouldn't have to.
- A credible, established partner instead of an unproven build. Choosing Climatiq over a custom-build agency meant AWARE™ could rely on Climatiq's solid track record, established reputation, and trustworthy documentation rather than taking on the technical and reputational risk.
- A scalable API that supports growth. AWARE™ started with Climatiq's core estimate endpoints to try the features before moving to PCF calculations and AI-powered emission factor matching from Mapping Agent. “If we scale the way we’d like to, we know Climatiq can scale with us.”
Integration itself was fast: "Getting a prototype up and running only took an afternoon, it was super easy," Rhys said, with the bulk of the remaining work going into user testing rather than setup.

Results: A faster path to market while being prepared for upcoming shifts
AWARE™ has introduced the Climatiq integration with customers to calculate transportation, material, and processing emissions directly within their existing user flow, without major changes required to how users already work on the platform.
Rather than positioning PCF data as a hard sell to producers who aren't yet engaged with sustainability regulation, AWARE™ is using it to signal maturity to brands and consumers further down the chain, and as a way to get ahead of DPP requirements before they land. In turn, engaged users get access to markets who are sensitive to incoming regulations.
