Frequently asked questions
What is PCF Studio and who is it for?

PCF Studio allows manufacturers and sustainability teams to easily calculate product carbon footprints (PCFs) fast. It guides users step-by-step through data import, emission factor mapping, gap filling, and ISO-aligned calculations – without requiring deep expertise or complete input data.

How is PCF Studio different from other solutions in the market?

Unlike traditional LCA tools, PCF Studio combines AI-powered emission factor mapping with a fully guided workflow, making it significantly faster and more accessible than traditional tools or consultant-led approaches. Compared to spreadsheet-based calculators, it gives you reliable and traceable results.

Do I need LCA expertise to use PCF Studio?

No – PCF Studio is designed to be accessible without a background in life cycle assessment. The tool guides you step-by-step through data upload, emission factor mapping, and calculation – handling much of the technical complexity for you.

Which standards does PCF Studio align with?

Climatiq's PCF methodology has been audited and verified to meet the requirements of ISO 14067, the GHG Protocol, and ISO 14064-3:2020-05. Our freight emissions methodology is accredited by the Smart Freight Centre for GLEC-compliant calculations, and was recertified against the GLEC Framework in July 2026.

PCF Studio provides data quality indicators (DQIs) in accordance with the PACT framework. All results come with a full audit trail for transparency.

Which emission factor data sources are used for PCF calculations?

PCF Studio draws on the largest database of scientifically vetted emission factors, from over a hundred datasets including sources such as Agribalyse, Circular Ecology, OEKOBAUDAT and Plastics Europe. Premium datasets such as ecoinvent, Carbon Minds, sustamize and IEA can be added to your plan.

You can also use your own primary data. Add custom emission factors, such as supplier-specific values, directly in PCF Studio and apply them to any component in place of secondary data. Direct supplier data exchange is coming soon.

How are system boundaries defined and managed?

PCF Studio supports both cradle-to-gate and cradle-to-grave calculations. Cradle-to-gate covers material sourcing, inbound freight, and manufacturing. For cradle-to-grave, you can add use-phase activities, such as lifetime electricity, fuel, consumables, or water use, and end-of-life treatment. AI suggestions are available if you don't have this data to hand. Cradle-to-grave is available on PCF Pro and Enterprise plans.

What impact categories are included in the PCF calculations?

PCF Studio calculates emissions expressed in CO2e, accounting for GWP100. Where the underlying emission factors report them, results are broken down into fossil, biogenic, and land-use change (LUC) emissions, in line with ISO 14067 and the GHG Protocol Product Standard. Other environmental impact categories are not currently covered.

Can PCF Studio help me collect emissions data from suppliers?

You can already bring your own primary data into PCF Studio: add custom emission factors, such as supplier-specific values, and apply them to any component. You can also reference PCFs you've already created as inputs to other PCFs. Direct supplier data exchange is coming soon. Contact us if you'd like to help shape it.

What input data does PCF Studio require to calculate a PCF? How do you handle data gaps?

The PCF is calculated based on a bill of materials (BoM) for each product, along with manufacturing energy and freight data where available. Where data is missing, PCF Studio uses AI-powered gap-filling with transparent, adjustable estimates so your calculations can proceed without complete data, and you can work on improving the data over time.

What security certifications does Climatiq hold, and where is my data stored?

Climatiq is ISO 27001 certified, SOC 2 compliant, and GDPR compliant. Further details on data storage and security practices are available at trust.climatiq.io.

Can PCF results be shared directly with customers or used to respond to enterprise RFPs?

PCF Studio is designed to make sharing results straightforward. Calculations come with a full audit trail and are aligned with reporting standards.

Do I need to pay to try out PCF Studio?

No - we have a free tier that gives you access to all of our Core datasets, to create five PCFs. You can just sign up, no need for a credit card to get started.
